Tartan Video Blu-Ray Releases For Spring 2008
Tartan Video is ready to launch its new wave of blu-ray titles with a mix of new titles and classics from its world cinema collection.
In April, Gus Van Sant’s ultra- stylish PARANOID PARK makes its blu-ray debut alongside its DVD release. Alex, a teenage skateboarder, accidentally kills a security guard in the vicinity of Paranoid Park, Portland’s tough street park, and decides to say nothing. The craftsmanship of legendary cinematographer Chris Doyle (In The Mood For Love/ Invisible Waves) looks even more sumptuous.
In addition, there’s the release of the richly evocative Korean’s chiller, A TALE OF TWO SISTERS, where two sisters are released from a mental institution and return home. But relationships with their stepmother lead to increasingly disturbed behaviour that threatens to destroy their lives.
In May, it’s a double delight for fans of Oldboy director, Park Chan-Wook. Firstly, his latest I’M A CYBORG is a charming fantasy comedy about a young girl who’s admitted to a mental institution, believing herself to be a cyborg. She befriends a fellow inmate who has the ability to steal people’s personality traits, but he’s determined to protect her.
Also released is Park Chan-Wook’s slick and inventive LADY VENGEANCE, which has Gu-eum-ja released from jail, having served a sentence for allegedly abducting and murdering a young boy. Now, with an army of allies, she plans her revenge. Both films confirm Park Chan-Wook’s international reputation as a filmmaker with a deliciously original imagination.
THE PROPOSITION heads up Tartan’s blu-ray release in June. John Hillcoat’s Powerful Peckinpah-style Western is a visually stunning tale of loyalty, betrayal and retribution set in the frontier of 1880s Australian outback, with an all-star cast including starring Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston and John Hurt. The script and score is written by rock legend, Nick Cave.
The month’s second release is SKY BLUE, a groundbreaking animated feature from Korea. In the near future, Earth’s resources have been over-exhausted and survivors now live in an organic city controlled by a dictatorial elite. Disillusioned patrol officer Jay joins a group of resistance fighters who hope to restore justice, equality, and blue skies. Traditional 2D animation combines with live-action miniatures, 3D CGI backgrounds, and state-of-the-art techniques which are all enhanced by the wonders of blu-ray.
Each disc will retail at an RRP of £24.99
Future blu-ray titles include the English-language version Funny Games, starring Naomi Watts, and P2, starring Rachel Nichols, as well as titles from Tartan’s catalogue.
